Burlington, VT Accounting Firm | Firm History Page | Montgomery & Merrill PC

Established in 1994, Colleen Montgomery and Marcia Merrill sought to create a firm environment where personal service was the overriding key element.  Both women had worked in a large firm and believed that as firm size increased, personal attention became less of a priority.  Consequently, one of their first decisions was NOT to hire a receptionist.  All these years later, the firm's founders and the other professional staff answer the phones.  Our clients like that when they call, they almost always can be connected immediately with the person they want to talk to; sometimes that person answered their call!

Another decision made early on was that in order to continue to provide the personal attention that we believe our clients deserve, we needed to remain small.  Today, we number four professional staff.  That number changes during the winter busy season, when we hire interns from the local colleges to help with tax preparation.

Hiring interns is another decision that we are proud of.  Our college interns, always bright and energetic, keep us on our toes and even keep us young.  We certainly have learned as much from the many students who have worked for us, as they have learned from us.  We enjoy the teaching aspect of hiring interns; we find opportunities to mentor and advise these budding accountants.  We think they learn a lot about tax preparation, see firsthand how a small public accounting firm works, and work with women accounting professionals in positions of leadership.

As business owners, Colleen,Marcia and Kathy feel strongly that our employees are assets to be nurtured.  As a result, long-time tax manager and "employee extraordinaire", Kathy Granai, joined Colleen and Marcia as a partner in 2013. As of January 2017, Marcia has retired and Colleen and Kathy will carry on doing business as Montgomery & Granai PC.

Nuturing our employees means that we stress that our families needs must be considered even when we are at our busiest.  Everyone has flexible schedules, we take time to exercise, we care about each other, we help out when life gets in the way of work.  We all give back to our communities in some way.  We serve on non-profit organization boards, we volunteer at various events, we participate in fund-raisers for organizations we care about.  As we say in our value statement, we believe in helping people and it's what we like to do.
