Hoaxbusters
Interspersed among the junk mail and spam that fills our Internet e-mail boxes are dire warnings about devastating new viruses, Trojans that eat the heart out of your system, and malicious software that can steal the computer right off your desk. Added to that are messages about free money, children in trouble, and other items designed to grab you and get you to forward the message to everyone you know. Most all of these messages are hoaxes or chain letters. While hoaxes do not automatically infect systems like a virus or Trojan, they are still time consuming and costly to remove from all the systems where they exist. At CIAC, we find that we spend much more time de-bunking hoaxes than handling real virus and Trojan incidents. These pages describe some of the warnings, offers, and pleas for help that are filling our mailboxes, clogging our mailservers, and that generally do not have any basis in fact.
In addition to describing hoaxes and chain letters found on the Internet, we will discuss how to recognize hoaxes, what to do about them, and some of the history of hoaxes on the Internet.

Looks Too Good To Be True
Every day, American consumers receive offers that just sound too good to be true. In the past, these offers came through the mail or by telephone. Now the con artists and swindlers have found a new avenue to pitch their frauds -- the Internet. The on-line scams know no national borders or boundaries; they respect no investigative jurisdictions. But, as with all scammers, they have one objective – to separate you from your money!
An interesting point about fraud is that it is a crime in which you decide on whether to participate. Hanging up the phone or not responding to shady mailings or emails makes it difficult for the scammer to commit fraud. But con artists are very persuasive, using all types of excuses, explanations, and offers to lead you – and your money - away from common sense.
This website was developed to arm you with information so you don’t fall victim to these Internet scam artists. Education, good judgment, and a healthy dose of skepticism are the best defenses against becoming a victim. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Exempt Organization Workshop
IRS has launched an Internet-based version of its Exempt Organizations Workshop covering issues faced by small and mid-sized tax-exempt organizations, the agency officially announced on Jan. 22. As described by IRS, the workshop, known as Stay Exempt—Tax Basics for 501(c)(3)s, is designed for organizations that have no tax experts on staff or have no or limited contact with outside advisors on tax compliance issues. The workshop consists of five interactive modules on tax compliance topics—tax-exempt status, unrelated business income, employment issues, Form 990 and required disclosures. It should take users approximately three hours to complete the five modules. The IRS Web site does not require registration and its visitors will remain anonymous, the agency said.
